Sage Durvasa once happened to visit King Kuntibhoja and was received with all due respects by Princess Kunti during his stay at the palace. Delighted by her hospitality her gave her the secret Mantra to beget children through the blessing of the God she wished. Eager to test the boon, Kunti spoke the mantra to Lord Surya and, Baby Karna was born with shining gold armour and earring. Fearing the opinion of people she left the baby afloat in a little casket in the river. Found by the charioteer of King Dhritarashtra of Hastinapur, Karna came to be called the Suta-Putra.
