Hey, guys. Gypsy with The Skate Truck NYC. We’re going to talk about some safety street skating tips. First off, you need to make sure, if you’re going to skate in the streets, that you have all the protective gear. So make sure you have a helmet, wrist guards, elbow pads, and knee pads. Real important to have all those things, because you never know what’s going to jump out in front of you while you’re street skating.

Some tips for skating is make sure that you’re able to stop before you go skate out in the street. Sometimes if you’re in New York City, a taxi will cut in front of you, and you’ve got to be able to stop quickly so that you don’t get run over by someone else or run into the taxi. Also, you never know about pedestrians or dogs or kids, so make sure that you keep your eyes open and your head on a swivel.

So, street skating, always keep your knees bent. Make sure that you have a good peripheral vision around what’s going on, and not blinders on. Make sure you’re always turning your head side to side, seeing what’s happening all around you, and paying attention to all of the street signs. You do have to follow all of the rules as well, so if there’s a red light, make sure you stop. If there’s pedestrians, make sure you don’t run them over, things like that.

A really good move to have when you’re street skating is a turn-around toe stop. So, when you’re skating, it’s a nice little turn, and then both toe stops come down. The purpose of doing this is being able to keep your eyes forward, but being able to stop quickly. Again, you’re skating forward, and it’s just a quick little turn around. Knees bent, feet far apart so that you’re not really close and have a small base. So staggered feet, and keeping your eyes in the direction that you’re going. This is what it looks like when you’re moving.

So, make sure: all your protective gear, keep your eyes focused on what’s going on around you, and be aware of your surroundings. So, happy street skating, and don’t get run over.
