If You Find Man’s Fingers, Don’t Panic But Stay Away
Lost in the woods. I’d never thought it would happen to me, but here I was, standing all alone in the grove not far from my home, watching the last rays of the sun disappearing. And as they fell on the ground beneath my feet, I saw something that made my heart jump to my throat and stay there. Fingers. Five of them, black and gnarled, with bluish-gray nails, poking from underneath some stump nearby. I couldn’t scream, but thankfully, my legs turned me around and carried me out of the woods. I didn’t care where I’d end up, I just needed to get away.
Luckily, by some wild chance, I ran in the correct direction, and soon saw the opening in the trees and a familiar glade. In some 15 minutes, I was home, still shaking. I took a cup of tea and turned on my phone to search for answers if there were any. It didn’t take me long to realize, with relief, that what I saw was Xylaria polymorpha — a species of mushrooms otherwise known as Dead Man’s Fingers. By the way, it turned out there are many weird and scary plants in the world. Here’s a compilation of the spookiest ones.
