Causes of back pain after delivery. Tips to reduce back pain – Dr. Shefali Tyagi

Back pain is one of the commonest symptoms after delivery and almost 90% of women can be having back pain. Very strong myth associated with back pain and labor or after cesarean is the anesthesia given or the epidural given. Majority of the people are under the misconception that the injection leads to back pain whereas that injection might not have any major contributing factor. This is a very safe injection to take. So actually why back pain will come after delivery is lack of calcium. Majority of feeding mothers will not take calcium thinking that one or two months is enough but generally calcium should be taken till the time you feed the baby and that calcium comes out from your back bones. So unless and until you supplement yourself with calcium it is bound to happen that the back pain will come. Another common thing is deficiency of calcium and Vitamin D that is rampant in our population. Around 95% of Indian women are deficient in Vitamin D. So you can get yourself checked for Vitamin D. Otherwise nowadays calcium as a combination with Vitamin D is available which can be taken regularly. Third thing is posture. The majority of the times the common mistake that children make is feeding the child in the wrong posture. Sitting in the middle of the bed without a back support and bending down and feeding. He back goes for a toss and you have to make sure that your posture is correct, your back is well supported, you have to sit on the chair or on the end of the bed with a good pillows and cushions so that back is nicely supported. Fourth is lack of exercises. Nobody in our society wants to exercise and lave alone the feeding moms. So you have to strengthen your back muscles. Once you start exercising regularly and strengthen your back muscles you will you have any back pain throughout life. So your delivery, your route of delivery, or epidural, spinal anesthesia has nothing to do with back pain. Improve your calcium and vitamin D intake and exercise regularly and maintain a correct posture, there will not be any back pain.
