Fish Kalia | Macher Kalia | Rohu Fish Curry | Rui Macher Kalia | Katla Kalia Recipe | Rohu Fish Curry Bengali | রুই মাছের কালিয়া

Ingredients for Fish Kalia:

– Rohu/Katla fish (around 5 to 6 pcs)- 500 gms.

Marination for fish:
– Salt- 1 tsp
– Turmeric powder- 3/4 tsp

Whole spices:
– Cumin seeds- 1/2 tsp
– Green cardamom- 3 nos
– Cinnamon- 2 pcs
– Cloves- 4
– Bay leaf- 1

– Onions, sliced-1 medium
– Onion paste-1 medium
– Ginger garlic paste- 2 tsp
– Tomato purée- 1 medium tomato
– Green chillies, slit- 2 nos

– Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp
– Chilli powder- 1.5 tsp
– Coriander powder- 1 tsp
– Cumin powder- 1 tsp
– Garam masala powder- 1/2 tsp

– Whisked curd/ yogurt- 3 tbsp
– Salt- 1/4 tsp
– Sugar- 1/2 tsp
– Mustard oil- 3 tbsp + oil for pan-frying the fish pieces

Preparation:

– Marinate the fish pieces with salt and turmeric powder. Set aside for 15-20 mins
– Slice the onions and slit the green chillies.
– Make a paste of a medium onion and purée one medium tomato.

Process:

– Take a frying pan and heat 3 tbsp of mustard oil. Let it come to smoking point and then reduce flame.
– Now add the marinated fish pieces and fry on medium for around 4 mins. Flip the pieces and continue to fry on the other side for another 4 mins. Keep frying till both the sides are light brown and a little crisp on the exterior. Remove and set aside.
– Now take a kadai/pan and heat 3 tbsp of mustard oil. Heat it to smoking point, reduce flame and then add the cumin seeds. Give a stir and add the whole garam masala and the bay leaf. Give a stir and add the sliced onion.
– Fry on medium for around 4-5 mins till the onions are yellowish brown in colour. Add the onion paste, mix it well and then add 1/2 tsp sugar. Mix it and continue to fry on medium for 2-3 mins.
– Add in the ginger garlic paste, mix and continue to fry on medium, switching few times to low for 5-6 mins.
– Add the tomato purée, mix and fry for 2 mins.
– Now add the Turmeric, Red Chilli, Coriander , Cumin Powders and 1/4 tsp salt.
– Mix well and continue to cook on low for 3-4 mins till masalas are cooked and oil separates.
– Add the whisked curd/yoghurt. Stir continuously and cook for 3-4 mins till oil separates.
– Add a cup of water, mix in and add garam masala powder. Let it come to a boil and slide in the fried fish pieces and slit green chillies.
– Cover and cook for 10 mins on low heat till oil separates. You can add more water if you want more gravy.
– Serve with rice.
