We all get headaches sometimes and the vast majority of them are nothing to worry about. In this video I’m going to tell you how to get rid of them and when you should seek medical attention. There are also many things that will make your headache worse and can even bring it on. These are probably the most important things which are often overlooked by patients which are also included in this video.

HEADACHE TRIGGERS:

Pent-up anger
When you’re angry, muscles in the back of your neck and scalp tense up, causing a tight band-like sensation around your head. This is a sign of a tension headache.

How to fix it: When you start feeling angry, breathe deeply and slowly. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, This should relax your head and neck muscles.

Poor posture
Poor posture causes tension in your upper back, neck and shoulders, which can lead to a headache. Typically, the pain throbs in the base of the skull and sometimes flashes into the face, especially the forehead.

How to fix it: Avoid sitting or standing in one position for a long period of time. Sit up straight and support your lower back. Consider using a special headset if you spend a lot of time on the phone, as holding a handset between your head and shoulder can strain muscles and cause headaches.

Bright lights
Bright lights and glare, especially if flickering, can induce migraines. This is because bright and flickering lights boost the levels of certain chemicals in the brain, which then activate the migraine centre.

How to fix it: At work, adjust your computer monitor or attach a glare screen. You may be able to turn off certain lights or move them. If you can’t, change where you sit in the office. Fluorescent lighting tends to flicker, so if you’re able to, substitute it with some other form of lighting.

Food triggers
Food triggers, were all different and certain foods do bring on headaches and migraines for some people. The common culprits are cheese, fizzy drinks and processed meats. So keep a diary on your phone writing down what you eat when you get migraines and find a correlation. Once you suspect a certain food is causing the headaches eliminate it for a couple of months and see if there is any improvement. Don’t get rid of food groups long term without speaking to your doctor.

MEDICATION OVERUSE HEADACHES:
Medication overuse headache is an unpleasant and long-lasting headache. It is caused by taking painkilling medication – usually for headache. Unfortunately, when painkillers are taken regularly for headaches, the body responds by making more pain sensors in the head. Eventually the pain sensors are so many that the head is super-sensitive and the headache won’t go away. People who have these headaches often take more and more painkillers to try to feel better. However, the painkillers have often long ceased to work.

Medication-overuse headaches are the most common cause of secondary headache. Read more about them here: https://patient.info/brain-nerves/headache-leaflet/medication-overuse-headache
