Despite knowing the risk involved unprotected sex is something at which many a young will do engage. So how soon are you sure after a risky exposure that you are 100% clear of HIV. There is no single correct answer to this question. There is a time gap between a potential infection and when you are actually tested positive for infection. This depends on the test which your care provider conducts. So after a risky exposure please extend to your health care professional. The time period in which the person is infected and the test is actually positive is known as HIV window period. The HIV window period can vary between 10 days to 3 months. During this period a person could test HIV negative even though they are HIV positive. So if you have had a risky exposure to HIV in the past few days you need to speak to your test counsellor regarding post exposure prophylaxis which needs to be taken within 72 hours rather than waiting for a 100% clearance from HIV.
