Pick up some tips on how to breastfeed a newborn baby from lactation consultant Melissa K. Nagin in this Howcast video.

If in fact you do have a baby that is having difficulty nursing at first, do not give up. There’s always help. Yes, there are babies, 50 percent of babies are going to have no problems latching on at first. Then there are going to be 50 percent that are going to have some sort of issue. This does not mean that breastfeeding is not going to happen for you. A nurse can bring a pump to you in the hospital to start stimulating your supply and to start simulating what the baby would typically be doing, all the while we’re working with the baby on the latching. Do not have to worry about not being able to sustain the breastfeeding experience because the baby is having difficulty at first with the latch.

Call in a lactation consultant. Call up anybody, any nurse who’s going to be able to help you if you are in the hospital still. There’s no reason to worry though because we can get these babies going. Sometimes it takes a little bit longer for some babies. Sometimes it takes a little bit shorter, but I always say be persistent and consistent with how your attempts go and you will be fine. The baby will latch on. We will get that going.
