This is a video that goes over the step by step way of drawing a tulip flower. Flowers are one of the essential art lessons that everyone needs to have. Flowers are everywhere in nature. In ever college art class I ever took, they went over flowers. Flowers are still and pleasant to look at. They are also very easily accessible if needed for reference. You can go out with a camera in the college garden and just shoot many pictures of flowers from different angles. There is also a large supply of resource photos of flowers online.
I think in general its very hard for someone to get an original looking image of a flower. The reason being that flowers are still and stagnant. They have beauty in the form, but not in their behavior in real time. I’ve seen time lapse flowers growing and those look amazing. My other experience with flowers is that of my grandmother.

My grandmother is an avid gardener. She is always planting a new flower or plant. Its very exciting visiting her. Its part of the inspiration I had to draw flowers in school. Painting flowers is must more preferable to me. Its more smooth. I do think drawing a flower is absolutely essential to painting a flower though. Drawing tended to deal with all the same problems that painting has, outside of color. You have to deal with proportion, value, light source and more of the same.
