How to Slip Stitches Knitwise & Purlwise | Beginner Knitting Tutorial | Through Backs of Loops

This tutorial goes through the simple variations of slipping stitches in knitting.
I teach how to slip stitches knitwise and purlwise first, as these are the most common instructions, and then I show you how to slip knitwise and purlwise with the yarn in front (wyif), with the yarn in back (wyib), and through the backs of loops (tbl).
These are less common but are easy to learn so I thought I’d throw them into this lesson too 🙂

Slipping knitwise: 0:35
Slipping purlwise: 1:30
Slipping knitwise with yarn in front: 2:00
Slipping purlwise with yarn in back: 2:30
Slipping knitwise through the back of the loop: 2:53
Slipping purlwise through the back of the loop: 3:14

I forgot to mention in the video, but if your pattern doesn’t tell you what kind of slip stitch to use, the default method is to slip the stitch purlwise…except if it’s a decrease and then you should slip the stitch knitwise. This isn’t the law though, and it’s down to personal preference really.
Just make sure that whatever slip stitch you choose to use in the pattern, stick with it throughout. Consistency is good!

Hope that’s helpful, and thank-you for watching 🙂
