Ingredients:-
1/2 cup split yellow pigeon peas (tur dal)
1/4 cup gram dal (chana dal)
2 tbsp. white lentil (urad dal)
1/4 cup split green gram (moong dal)
1/4 cup split red lentil (masoor dal)
1 small onion finely chopped
2 tomatoes peeled and chopped
curry leaves
2 green chillies slit
1 tsp. cumin seeds
1/2 tsp. mustard seeds
1/2 tsp. asafoetida (heeng)
1 tsp. ginger paste
1 tsp. garlic paste
1/2 tsp. turmeric powder
3/4 tsp. red chilli powder
1 tsp. coriander and cumin seed powder
2 cinnamon pieces
3 cloves
salt to taste
coriander leaves
2 tbsp. oil
1/2 lemon

Method of preparation-
– Soak all 5 lentils for 1/2 hour. Add roughly chopped peeled tomatoes and 2 cups of water and pressure cook it for 3-4 whistles.
– For tadka, heat 1 tbsp. oil in a round bottom pan. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, cinnamon and cloves, asafoetida, green chillies and few curry leaves. Stir well. Add onions. Add ginger paste and garlic paste. Let it cook.
– Churn the lentil mixture lightly.
– Once nicely cooked, add the tadka to the lentil mixture. Mix well.
– Add the dried spices viz. turmeric powder, red chilli powder and coriander cumin seed powder. Add salt to taste and coriander leaves. Mix well and add 1 and 1/2 cup of water.
– Keep the dal back on heat. Keep stirring at regular intervals. Let it boil for 7-8 min.
– Squeeze in a lemon while serving.
– Serve hot with any rice, Indian flat bread.
