What causes periods for more than 10 days in a teenager? – Dr. Teena S Thomas

Most common cause for periods more than 10 days in a teenager is hormonal imbalance. They would have just started their periods. After the menarche usually up to two years the periods can be a little heavier or delayed. So we usually do not put them on hormones or anything. But in later ages if they have more than 10 days of periods then we definitely need to cut it down. So you put them on treatment. Most common reason can be just a hormonal imbalance. You have to rule out PCOD, obesity, any other hormonal causes for this. So all those tests we have to do. First line of treatment are non hormonal drugs like tranexemic acid, progesterone or oestrogen-progesterone which are second line of drugs. Though other reasons including pregnancy or any other causes has to be ruled out and treated appropriately.
