5 Diet Mistakes That Can Trigger Severe Headaches and Migraines

Although we know that migraines have four stages to them and often begin during childhood, we are still unsure of what the exact medical causes of them are.

Migraines are known for their severe throbbing pain, pulsing sensations, and extreme sensitivity to light.

They are often accompanied by vomiting, disabling pain, and symptoms like flashing light and tingling in the face.
Migraines can occur for a few hours, or they can last up to a few days.

The one thing we do know though is that according to studies, there are triggers and some of these trigger points have to do with diet.

Here are five food triggers that can cause migraine attacks.

1. Food Additives: unfortunately there are a lot of foods that have added chemicals and no nutritional values which may trigger headaches.
Be on the lookout for nitrates and nitrites, often found in processed meats like hot dogs and bacon, as these cause your blood vessels to swell.
Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a common flavour enhancer that is used in processed foods and canned vegetables and is considered a preservative.
Other food additives to avoid are sucralose and aspartame as these are artificial sweeteners and red and yellow food coloring as these are made out of petroleum.

2. Gluten: for those who are gluten-intolerant, eating bread items that contain this protein can cause migraines to trigger.
Food items like barley, wheat, and rye all contain gluten. If you are gluten-intolerant, it is best to either avoid these items or choose gluten-free alternatives.

3. Citrus Fruits: some of these fruits can actually affect your blood’s pH level which may trigger a migraine attack if you are sensitive to the tyramine and histamine found in these fruits.
4. Aged Cheese: can be a migraine trigger for those who are sensitive to tyramine. Cheese types include cheddar, blue, brie, gouda, feta, and swiss.

Fresh cheese and mozzarella are generally safe.

5. Caffeine and Alcoholic Beverages: an excessive consumption of caffeine can contribute to headaches due to dehydration and alcoholic beverages like red wine, beer, and sparkling wine can also cause headaches due to dehydration.

If you are looking for a solution to your migraine attacks, choose to eat more meals, keep yourself hydrated with plenty of water and make sure you are getting enough vitamins and minerals.

If you have low magnesium, iron, copper or B vitamins, then look into getting a supplement as a deficiency in these can cause the onset of headaches.
