Causes of lower abdominal pain in a woman? – Dr. H S Chandrika

Female pelvis has got something special, as we have the different organs and the pelvis pain depends on the organ involved. So depending on the causes of pain, there are umpteen number of causes for the pain. One of the cause is constipation, where motion is getting stuck and not able to pass properly. Problem of intestine like ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, they can also manifest as pelvic pain and when we come to female, there is endometriosis, that is the lining of the uterus is present in odd places. Fibroid uterus is also very common nowadays, routinely it will not cause any pain but if it is very big and has undergone secondary changes, that time it can cause pain or if it is too big then in the surrounding areas it can cause pain. Pelvic inflammatory disease can be another cause for pelvic pain. In young females there can be ovulation pain, every month when there is release of egg, in some people it can manifest as pain. Also if you have undergone surgeries like there is clumping of the tissues and this can be a chronic pain. Another thing is adenomyosis, where the endometriosis which can happen in the walls of the uterus and it can be the cause of pelvic pain and also in some infections depending on what is the infection can manifest a span. Routinely in young girls there can be monthly pain in young girls as cramps, or dysmenorrhoea. In ectopic pregnancy or pregnancy happening outside the uterus and give rise to mild pain when it is existing without any problem. Also there is rupture of ectopic pregnancy, then it is a catastrophe, then they have to be hospitalised immediately and taken care of immediately. After that is if the individual is pregnant, then it can give rise to pelvic pain. Sometimes in mid pregnancy or later pregnancy also it can go to pelvic pain because of prematurity of onset of labour or abortion getting induced because of onset of labour. Also there can be appendicitis, or hernia. Where there is weakness of the muscles, commonest one is umbilical hernia, intestinal or abdominal wall hernia. Also there is routine muscle spasm. There are so many muscles in the pelvis, there may be spasms of one of those muscles and in urinary infection also it is quite a common thing. Nowadays it is too common and interstitial cystitis. Also kidney stones can happen from anywhere in the kidney and pelvic pain is what is happening in the lower part of the abdomen. The kidney stone reaches the lowest part, that may cause severe pain when it is trying to get expelled and there is ovarian mass, which is a mass near the ovary and it can give rise to pain.
