Diet for young individuals suffering with Typhoid – Ms. Sushma Jaiswal

Diet is essential in any sickness or illness because diet is the fuel for the body and the body’s requirement increases. For example protein. normally a person requires 60 to 70 grams of protein in the body. In sickness, the protein requirement goes upto 80 – 90 or even 100 grams per day. However the person is not able to take that protein. So we have to include some high protein foods in the diet like milk, yoghurt, curd, dals, legumes, pulses, sprouts etc, those are easily digestible protein and high protein diet and some cheese, paneer etc. then you have to give the person a high fiber diet because lots of medications during typhoid or any other diseases puts a load on the digestive system . Generally the digestive system is relatively weaker during weakness. So that time giving high fiber diet would cause an irritation to the intestinal lining. So you have to give less fiber diet. During typhoid the body loses a lot of minerals like sodium and potassium due to lot of sweat and urination. So to compensate that you have to have lots of foods which are rich in minerals and you have to give lots of foods also like soups and liquids like tender coconut water, spinach soups, paneer soups, lot of fluids, carbohydrates. Carbohydrates foods should be well cooked and which are not having too much of sugar, then fats. Fats should be given moderately. Person is having diarrhea, then we have to restrict fat also. There is an increased need if vitamins. If there is any illness or infections. Some of the vitamins also work as antioxidants like protective nutrients, so you have to give vitamin rich foods in typhoid. Giving a multivitamin tablet would also help. So give well balanced diet and stay healthy.
