Visiting a psychiatrist for the first time, there is lot of mystery associated with it, lot of stigma associated with it, lot of ignorance associated and an enormous emotional reaction when a patient first meets a Psychiatrist. Lot of my patients ask me forts look at my face and tell my diagnosis. Unfortunately all of this things are very untrue and what the patient expect and what is in store are two things. Psychiatrist like any medical professional is a person who has a two thronged approach, one he has to fitting the medical pieces of the puzzle and understand the emotional reaction. So how the Psychiatrist approaches the person is the medical modal, any doctor has the same medical approach, the doctor will ask you certain questions. This is called as “presenting complaint. He will go back to the past and find out the past issue, past Psychiatric issue. He will go on to explore the family dynamics, be it the family of origin and understand the family maters and first do a head to toe examination. A Psychiatrist needs to do a specialized form of examination called as the “Mental Status Examination”.
