How long does it take for uterus to go back to normal after delivery? – Dr. Himani Sharma

Within minutes after delivery, once the placenta is out, actually the uterus contracts. These contractions in the uterus are because of the smooth muscles that are lining the inner lining of the uterus which are arranged in a criss cross pattern. These contractions in the patient are labeled as after pains, these cause the uterus to shrink. After 1 week of delivery, the uterus actually becomes half of the size which was earlier during pregnancy and further one week, and the uterus from an abdominal organ will become a pelvic organ. As the weeks pass on and as the 4 weeks pass on the uterus comes to the prepregnancy size and weight. So uterus actually takes up around 6 weeks’ time to once to the prepregnancy size and weight.
