A tonsillolith is usually not very symptomatic. You have an occasional finding of white spots on the tonsils. You may get scared while looking at them. But usually tonsillolith do not have any symptoms. Rarely it may cause throat irritation. Sometimes they are found incidentally. You may have throat infection, recurrent fever and many times it can cause halitosis or bad breath. Tonsil stones is one of the predominant causes of bad breath excluding the other causes of the gum or teeth problem. But tonsillolith is known to cause bad breath. If they are big and causing problems, it needs to be examined. There are no ways to prevent tonsillolith as it is developing within the crib or the hole within the tonsils. The only way to prevent his is the removal of tonsils, and it can be done in all the cases. In any case, have healthy diet, avoid cold and sour things like lemon, orange, which causes constriction of these papillae or the follicles. That can increase the incidence of tonsillolith or tonsillar stones. If that is not able to prevent the tonsillar stones then meet your ENT doctor depending on the size and the state of your stones.
