What causes chest pain after workout? – Dr. Sanjay Panicker

Whenever there is pain in the chest on workout the first thing that the first thing that anybody may think of probably is a heart issue which may not be always be true but it is important to rule out this possibility. The other most common reason why people can develop chest pain during exercise or post exercise is costochondritis, the inflammation of the cartilages in the costal region of the chest which can cause pain. We all experience a little bit of pain on and off, may be sharp stitching pain in the region of the chest. This condition is called as Tietze’s syndrome. There is no specific reason understanding this. Suddenly you feel sharp stitches here and there in definite areas of the chest. There can also be a condition where you can have sharp stitching pain in the chest when you take a deep breath. This is also a very normal condition which can be seen, Precordial catch syndrome it is otherwise called as. You need not worry about these two conditions. There are other conditions like Gastro oesophageal Reflux Disease which is common in teenagers because they may go empty stomach or they may eat a little bit of food and then they may go work out. This may cause the food to have a reflux into the lower part of the oesophagus, causing the acid also to leak in and causes erosion of the lining of the oesophagus. This is called the Gastro oesophageal Reflux Disease. That is also very common in athletes. So considering these possibilities all that you need to take care is that drink sufficient water, see that you have costochondritis, treat that, after exercise you can use local pain balms that are available which will give relief. Gastro oesophageal Reflux Disease should be treated accordingly. Cardiac issues require medical attention.
