What Causes Headaches?

Let’s face it; everyone one of us have experienced a headache at some point in our lives

It’s a common problem that can disrupt daily activities and even leave you in bad shape.

It’s however good to point out that headaches usually do not represent a serious illness.

In essence, that sharp, dull, intermittent or pounding pain can be resolved if you only knew about its cause.

Now, the big question is, “What Causes Headache?”

The very first thing you should know is that headache is caused by irritation or injury to the pain-sensing structures of the head including the forehead, scalp, top of the head as well as the head and neck muscles.

It’s however important to note that the brain itself cannot hurt. Why? Well, it’s only because it has no sensory nerve endings.
For the most part, you’re likely to suffer a headache when the pain-sensing structures of the head suffer irritation, tension, compression, spasm, and inflammation.

What About Headache Triggers?

Now, it’s not enough to know what causes headaches; you also need to learn more about common headache triggers.
The thing is the events that trigger headaches vary from person to person.

That said, you won’t be wrong to join us as we take a sneak peek at some of them.

• Noise
For starters, some sounds can take a toll on your head, and I’m not just talking about those loud and repetitive ones.
The thing is, even low-level continuous noise can trigger the pain.
Try to use headphones when listening to music and of course, stick to calming music.

• Anxiety
All that stress and thoughts about your life and work can take a toll on your overall health.
Just take life easy, breath and take a stroll — you’ll feel a lot better!

• Drugs
It’s also important to note that some medications tend to trigger a headache.
Don’t hesitate to see your doctor if you notice an increase in the pain.

• Insufficient Sleep
Sleep deprivation can also trigger a headache — try to get enough each time you shut your tired eyes.
And of course, be sure to avoid sleeping in odd positions.

• Hormonal Changes
Ladies are more likely to get a headache when estrogen levels drop — this is usually before your period.
As you probably guessed, it’s in your best interest to keep track of your cycle and of course, plan ahead.

• Food Sensitivity
You may not know this, but some foods and drinks release neurotransmitters which can cause sharp, dull or pounding pain in the head.

Some triggers include caffeine, alcohol, aspartame, cheese just to name a few.

And that’s it! These are just some of the most common headache triggers that are obviously within your control.
In essence, you can actually do a few things to keep the pain away.
But as usual, never hesitate to see a doctor if it gets out of hand. Stay healthy.
