What causes sudden black spots in front of the eyes when standing? – Dr. Sunita Rana Agarwal

It can happen at any time. Usually these black spots aren’t going to go. Usually the whole medium in front of the retina must be transparent. So we have the vitreous, the lens, some fluids in the eye, and the cornea. All these layers must be transparent. If any of them have any little spot which is opaque it will reflect as black spots on the eye. This comes usually when some blood vessels have leaked blood into the vitreous chamber. When you are lying down and standing up and suddenly you see the black spots then you know that some blood has leaked into the eye. That is a very dangerous situation. It can happen with diabetes or hypertension or trauma or any other condition as well. But the minute you see the black spots please visit your eye care practitioner because they may be able to guide you further. We will not be able to remove those black spots that have already come in. However, those black spots that have not yet coming we may be able to reduce that onslaught. We can’t take over a vitreous haemorrhage unless we do a big surgery. We may be able to reduce further leakage of blood into the vitreous. But to do that the patient will have to go through laser and gene therapy injections. That means we take one drop of blood, make the patient’s own stem cells, healthy fetal DNA and back as injection. In this way we will seal up any leakage areas that have occurred. Still have to treat the underlying cause that can produce vitreous haemorrhage.
