Which lens & type of surgery is best for Cataract? – Dr. Elankumaran P

There are two questions asked here. Which is the better lens and which surgery is better. Regarding surgery the best is micro incision cataract surgery wherein we just use a 2mm opening and use the ultrasound to emulsify the cataract to remove it in a liquid form and through the same small 2mm hole we inject lens inside. As regards the intra ocular lenses used there are various options available and off late there is no single blanket treatment given to the patient. It depends on the patient. Particularly we look at what is known as the q value of the patient and then decide the type of the lens that is to be used. Generally a gynaecologist requires a very good distant vision, very good near and a reasonably good intermediate vision. Distant vision for routine activities, near and intermediate vision for the surgeries and procedures they do. So a good option would be to use a multi focal lens with a good q value which is different for each patients. So nowadays we are introducing a concept called custom cataract surgery where in the Q value of the patient is measured and then depending on this Q value we advice what kind of lens that particular patient should have inside the eye for best results.
